THE "STANDARDBREDS"

ABOUT US

The chorus was officially chartered in September 1968 as a chapter of SPEBSQSA (the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America), Inc.  That organization has been re-named The Barbershop Harmony Society. We currently have about 25 active members and the society has about 33-thousand members.  There are barbershop chapters around the world (e.g., England, Germany, Sweden, Canada).

CHORUS TYPES

Some choruses are dedicated to being "the best" and devote much of their time toward competition within the society.  If you have ever seen any of the TV programs (especially on PBS) featuring barbershop choruses/quartets, you know that there are some outstanding singing groups within our society.  Remember, these are men who do this as a hobby, and not as a group of professionals.

Our chorus could be classified as one that is more committed to getting together a group of men who enjoy singing four-part barbershop harmony, concentrate on learning the music for our annual stage show, and taking  time to enjoy the camaraderie during our weekly rehearsal.

CHECK US OUT

Based on that premise, we do not have auditions for men who want to join our chorus.  If they like to sing, we put them in the chorus and help them learn how to fit their voice into one of the four parts.  And one more very important point needs to be made.  That is, that the greater majority of our members do not read music!  We have a very competent director who is dedicated to helping each member to be the best he can be.

REHEARSALS

The chorus holds open rehearsals every Monday evening (except on some holidays), from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, at the Main Administration Building of the Homewood at Plum Creek Retirement Community, 425 Westminster Ave, Hanover.  Visitors are welcome and there is always a seat open for any man who would like to sit in with the chorus and test his vocal 'chords.'  Or, you can just sit and listen!

OUR ANNUAL STAGE SHOW

FINAL REHEARSAL FOR THE SHOW

Each year (starting 40 years ago) the chorus presents a two-hour musical stage show. This year's show will be on Saturday, September 27, 2008.  The chorus performs 10 or 11 songs; 3 or 4 quartets composed of men within the chorus sing one song each;  and there is always an outstanding guest quartet from out of town.  The guest quartet presents a unique "show-within-the-show" that lasts about 30 minutes.

Performances are staged at the Hanover High School Auditorium, located at 401 Moul Avenue, in Hanover (one block off Broadway).  There will be one performance only; at 7:30 PM.  Tickets are $10.00, with no reserved seats. And, of course, this is entertainment that is appropriate for every member of the family.
